Contouring makes certain places on your face less noticeable because it makes them look like they're receding by making fake shadows so focus on the areas of your face you want to make thinner. Most people apply it below the cheek bones (suck in your cheeks and apply in the hollows), on the temples. and around the edges of the face. There are lots of helpful images and tutorials out there. Make sure to blend well so it doesn't look fake.
