Ugh yeah!! The other day I was just browsing and as I was walking away and like in another department this sales rep was trying to tell me about a Murad sale AS I'm walking away and like already in a completely different section. So awkward.

My absolute pet peeve is having store employees up you're ass who won't leave you alone! Constantly staring at you, like damn, I came here to shop alone! If I wanted to have someone to assume I need help with every little thing I would have brought a friend of my own! This behaviour in employees makes me not want to buy anything!

Lol I don't have an ulta where I live but the one I go to, nearest me(mind you that's like 2 hours away so once in a blue moon), the employees aren't like that at all. they greet you and don't bother after that..which I don't mind, I hate pushy sales people.

The girls at my local Ulta are sweet but like someone else mentioned, usually clueless?! Lmao. I know Ulta carries a HUGE range of products but I still feel like if I ask where a product is located they shouldn't just look at me blankly and ask "What is that...?"
In the high end part of Ulta I cannot be left alone and in the low end part of Ulta I cannot find anyone to ask for help!

I'd like to clear something up for you ladies. I'm not in any way trying to be rude at all, just giving my personal opinion! O.k, SO I also work at a store that's similar to ulta but it's a Canadian shop, I work in the cosmetics section. I had 8 days of training and the rest was up to me to figure out and learn on my own. Everything I know is from reading books, watching videos, and customer feed back... Some employees are hired with very minimal experience and some aren't. Another thing. Cosmeticians only stare you down for ONE reason and one reason only. Because people steal. We do not think everyone are thieves. It is literally our JOB to keep an eye on you! For example. If something gets stolen the night I am working, I get in trouble because I should have been watching the customers! My manager literally goes on camera to see how they stole the product and to see what I was doing/where I was. Also, yes we get commission but it's an extremely low amount. I'm talking about cents.. Managers appreciate us for selling as much as we can so that's probably why they throw so many products at you! BUT some employees are down right rude, and I'm sorry you guys have encountered them... it makes me a little sad when people just assume all of them are crappy, though, because I truly try to do my best by acknowledging everyone, being knowledgable and maybe customers visit timely and enjoyable

Weird...I can't get the Ulta employees in my areas to acknowledge half the clients in the store!

Suzy...you should not be asked to perform the duties of store security. To blame you for theft is absolutely insane. Especially in this day in age...there have been store employees killed by stopping shoplifters. You cannot stop every single person that comes thru your doors from stealing. Its impossible. I feel you...working in an environment like that where managers expect you to resist the illegal actions of others. That's the job for store security. :(

Shelley, in most retail jobs the associates are the security. I have only worked in two stores that had actual security personnel, and even then the security was just enforcement and associates were the eyes. Preventing shrink (inventory loss through theft, broken, missing, etc. items) is high priority for all employees in a store.
The only time that someone will get injured or killed dealing with a shoplifter is if they are trying to be a hero and breaking company policy. Everyone learns in training that when someone is stealing, you never directly confront them and accuse them. Talk to them, yes, because nine times out of ten when they realize you've seen them and know their face they will dump whatever they were going to steal. If they make it to the door, you let them go. An injury to an employee or thief from confrontation is too much of a liability; writing off the lost merchandise as shrink is much cheaper for the store's bottom line. This is basic security training for retail, and official policy in pretty much every employer.

I understand that Emily...I too spent some years in retail but what bothered me is how Suzy's manager would blame employees for any thefts that took place in their store. Years ago I was a manager of a Judy's and I had a crew rush my store right before closing and cleaned out 3 rounders right in front of me and they had box cutters in their hands...the lone girl out of the crew stood behind the cashwrap to make sure my cashier didnt use the phone to call police. It happened so fast. My regional mrg didnt get mad and blame me or staff for it. And at local costume jewelry store by my house some poor girl was punched in the face when she asked some suspected shoplifter if she needed help. These days people don't dump and split. They assault and split with merchandise in hand. So violent confrontations are more prevalent than you think.

I agree with you 100% Shelley. I respect where Emily is coming from and agree with her to an extent, but I don't necessarily think getting hurt or harmed by a thief is always due to "trying to be a superhero" or by breaking company policy.

Yes same thing happened to me a few months ago when out with my friends but we assumed they kept bothering us because they thought we were going to steal something literally almost all of the employees kept staring at us and asked us if we needed help every five minutes we were so annoyed we walked out pissed off
