Yes you can buy henna hair powder and you can mix it with water, tea or coffee (tea or coffee gives you a more red tint), it will be a paste and you thoroughly apply it to your hair like any other dye and let it sit. The longer you let it sit, the bolder the color. Oh also, when you mix the paste, you need to let it sit for at least 24 hrs. When it's ready, it will be a reddish orange color (it starts out green)

Red will definitely look brassy if you try and do it with henna.

If you do use henna then you have to make sure you want it for a long time. Henna can contain metallic pieces in it and it cannot be bleached or dyed over. It can cause a chemical reaction from the metallic pieces in it and can really badly damage hair. It can even just break off wherever the metallic pieces are, even if they are high on the scalp.
Henna is fantastic if you stick with it, but just make sure in the future to tell your hair dresser you've dyed it with henna.

Also, you don't have to buy it online. Any organic store should have it.

Yes you can and you don't need to worry about any metal pieces if you get a completely herbal and organic one! You can get it if you have any Asian or preferably Indian supermarkets near you. That's where my mom gets hers. What you get is a green powder which you mix with water (instructions will be given). I know some people actually add yogurt because they say it refreshes their hair but I haven't tried that yet. Leave the mixture to set overnight and in the morning, apply it to your hair and leave it in for at least 3-4 hours. How long a color lasts depends on how long you leave in the dye. It gives you a reddish, coppery color which I think is really cute but my hair is black so it won't make much of a difference! Keep in mind this will only last for about 3 months!
