If there's a bit of red in the brown it might turn a bit orange/brassy.

First thing, is the "brown hair" natural or colored? Hair, when it's lightened goes through various stages of color. I disagree with the ash brown, it most definitely will be a warm if not orange color brown. I would of course suggest to let a professional do it, BUT if not the best way to lighten hair is with highlights.

In my experiences the only way to achieve a lighter color is to actually lighten it with bleach, tone and then add the color I want.

If your hair is already colored the rule of thumb is " color doesn't remove color". Gypsy is right, the best way is bleach and toner.
