I plan on going to cosmetology school soon and the school I'm looking at, its program covers hair, nails, makeup and skincare.. so since you don't want to waste time on things that you're not interested in, I would go with esthetics. But I'm still not too sure, because like you said, it might not cover everything. I feel like cosmetology goes through everything so fast, so I'm sure that not every detail will be covered either way honestly. :/

You don't have a makeup school around your area?

Some states you don't need a license to apply makeup, only if you do other services like waxing or facials.
what are those online courses @jacqlyn? I'd be interested in that! there's not a single makeup school in my state.

I learned about an hour of makeup out of the 1500 hours I took for my cosmetology license. I have a friend that went to school for esthetics and said they didn't go deep into makeup, but learned a lot more than I did. Plus you learn more skin disorders and proper ways to sanitize and apply makeup in esthetics so I recommend esthetics :)

And the discounts you get for being a makeup artist is so worth the school and being certified :) plus I wouldn't want anyone not knowing proper sanitation or application doing my makeup. But that's just me :)

I was in the exact same situation and I went with esthetics and couldn't be more happy. I have no interest in hair and when I told the administrator that she said no way to cos because it's like 90% hair and just touches on everything else. I love esthetics and since we learn so in depth about skin it will definitely help out with makeup. we did learn makeup, not the training I'd get in a makeup school but I definitely have a great understanding on individuals skin to start. I went into it thinking I only wanted to do this to get my license so I could take makeup workshops after which I'm still doing but I love my program. I am also a certified spray tan tech, have a job I'm starting in Jan at a cosmetic surgeons office to do med spa treatments and am planning on just doing a little bit of everything. the cosmetic surgeons office job is only a few days a week and good money so I was planning on doing makeup and spray tanning as a part time add on.

My concern was I figured with cos I would have a wider range of job opportunities which can be true but I started to realize how much you can do with esthetics because I never wanted to be in a back room of a spa doing facials all day. I am also looking into lash extensions and getting certified with that. I got the job over other girls for the spray because I was in school for esthetics and my employer thought that would be helpful so there really are so many things you can do with this license which is nice if you change your mind about the makeup.

I'm going into esthetics for makeup. My aunt and my dads fiance were both in cosmetology and said they didn't cover much on makeup. If you know Chelsea Houska from 16 & pregnant and teen mom 2 she was in esthetics at Stewarts and talked to my dads fiance about what they do in the esthetician department and they do go in depth with makeup more than cosmetology.

I went to cosmetology school and they mostly teach you about hair. They also showed me how to do nails but the basic, but their where girls that knew how to do beyond basic. I went in there thinking they where going to teach me makeup also but no, they only talked about makeup for one day, and every now and then. If I would of known I would of just done esthetician and a makeup program on the side. When I graduated I was a bit upset because all the money that I had to spent. But now I don't regret it I'm happy I got licensed with that being said, look for a school that does teach you only makeup, and if your into skincare I would try esthetician school. I hope that helps.

Hi Alexis,I talked to Jackie she said you may have to travel a bit to go to the nearest makeup school. Also to Jacqlyn; Jackie said you still can do online and just research to make sure you can actually just take the boards for makeup to get you're license.:-)
