Finding primer to match foundation.

I know there have been a few threads about water/silicone based primers and matching them to your foundation. I have been on Google for a good 15 mins and I can't seem to find a primer to match a foundation. I have dry skin, so from what I've just read I think that means I need a water based primer? (Even if Smashbox says their primer is hydrating?). My goal was to match a specific primer to a specific foundation and buy it. No can accomplish. Does anyone have this accomplished already? Can any of you ladies tell me what a good pairing of primer and foundation is for dry skin?  (Jaqueline?)

What is the foundation you are wearing? If its oil-based you don't want to pair it with a waterbased primer...water and oil don't go together. I use Hourglass Mineral Primer to go with all my oil free foundations since the primer itself is oil free. IT Cosmetics has a hydrating serum primer that is geared for dry skin.

Well I'm no pro so I will start with that. But myself I have confused combo skin oily tzone and dry once it touches foundation. Believe it or not I've had great luck with the baby skin primer as well as porefessional both of which I believe are silicone based primers. I have also used a BB cream as a primer which helped my skin stay moisturized all day as opposed to a regular primer which isn't as moisturizing. I don't use powder to set hardly ever and carry a skin refreshing spray on most days :)

According to my research there are oil based primers and then there are silicone based primers (and then water). With dry skin I'm thinking I need water based. I've been using Smashbox hydrating primer and now I find out its silicone based. I'm also using Kat Von D lock it foundation, and MUFE HD foundation. (I have a foundation by VooDoo that I know is water based). So what matches? Am I wearing foundations that are good for dry skin? Do they go with water based primer? Is it actually ok to wear silicone base if I have dry skin? I'm a little overwhelmed.

Ok so I read some more and I found out that my specific primer by Smashbox is actually water based. Great. Now I just have to find out about a foundation. Unfortunately my foundations are at my salon, not my home, so I'll check the ingredients on those tomorrow or maybe online if I get to feeling like doing any more reading.  Whew!

I read about the embryolisse lait creme and I put it on my list!
So I went ahead and researched my two foundations online and I found that my MUFE HD is water based and my Kat Von D is silicone based. At least that helps me know which of my primers to match it to. I'll just experiment as far as what's best for my dry skin. I remember this kind of frustration in makeup academy when things felt complicated. Unfortunately the makeup academy I went to has their own line of makeup and they push it pretty hard, so while I learned about techniques and many other things, I didn't learn so much about other products. Learning every day!

This winter I have become hooked on it cosmetics feel the moment serum primer and it is very hydrating. I've used it with UD naked skin foundation, Maybelline fit me, & Loreal true match so far all with no pilling or noticeable compatibility issues.

You will not be disappointed with the Embryolisse!! I have the green Smashbox primer for when my dermatitis acts up and it doesn't seem to want to work with any of my foundations however I am always rushed in the am so I think it's kinda my fault for not letting it sit long enough:(

I'm going to spring for the Laura Mercier foundation and primer together. Jacqueline I'm glad you responded. Is there any consensus as to which is better- water based or silicone based (anything)? Does it depend on the skin type? The more I learn on here the more disappointed I am with my makeup academy. I wasn't taught this stuff. How can I call myself a pro MUA (cosmetology board gave me a permit) and not know these things? It's disheartening.

Kathryn...first off Happy New Year's to you!! Second, please do not feel disheartened about what you learned during your time in academy. The fact that you are involving yourself in a forum and actually posting your work on here for criticism is pretty damn brave (excuse my bold choice of words as I never use foul lauguage in a public setting). How will you learn and grow as an artist if you subject yourself to a dark corner?! Never apologize for asking questions. Never apologize for not knowing x,y and z. I've been watching my daughter make her way thru the maze of makeup artistry and its mind blowing to me. You chose a career path that many don't have the guts to dive into. My daughter, my baby has a saying..."artists never stop learning. If we do our hands become stagnant and the passion is no longer within us." From what I understand, the principle is you don't want to mix incompatible ingredients (Oil based foundation with a water-based primer for example). As you know, oil and water don't mix. Neither does water and silicone. If we combine ingredients that don't mix, we get the opposite of the desired effect, as the foundation is going to Jose melt off your face.
