I have naturally blonde hair and my cousin & aunt, who are hairstylists, have been doing it my whole life. Recently I relocated 900 miles from them and have been doing my own hair red for the past year.
So I had bright vibrant magenta/red hair that I did myself with Loreal HiColor in Magenta and then would put Vampire Red on top of it from Manic Panic.
I got tired of it and went to a salon to get her to get rid of it. I showed her five different pictures of ombres where the girl had an auburn or reddish brown hair or even a medium brown or chocolate color that faded to blonde on the ends. This is what I asked for. My cousin told me she would be able to bleach it (my hair is in great condition) and then put a color over it. The hairstylist told me that she would rather just put a color over it and then I can come back and get the blondes on the end the next time. I assumed she was going to put a medium brown, because at that point I hadn't dyed my hair in two months and I was washing it in burning hot water trying to get the red to fade, and it was very faded to a rust color.
When she was done, my hair looked like what is in the picture. I think she was horrified that it came out that dark. It's not black even though it looks it, but it's like the darkest brown you can have before it's black. I asked her when we could lighten it and she said we can put highlights in or she can do a caramel ombre instead of a blonde, but this hair color is not what I want. I'm pale and I have white eyebrows and white eyelashes and it's SO MUCH MAINTENANCE for me to look right in dark hair.
I cancelled my second appointment with her and I want to try it on my own. I'm afraid to strip or bleach my hair by myself, and I don't trust hairstylists right now lol, so I was thinking about maybe using the L'Oreal HiColor Hilights in Ash Blonde or Honey Blonde? I know it won't be blonde but even if I can get it to a pretty brown color that would be great. Do you think my hair will lift at all after 2-3 tries? Or do you have any other suggestions on how to do get it to a brown/honey color where I can eventually get to a golden blonde/honey all over?

Girl I have to say the blonde is so you I love it and I would have to say if you're going to use the Loreal hicolor I mean it is a good color brand so all you can really do is try and I wish you the best of luck :)

I'm no expert when it comes to coloring hair. I dyed mine traffic cone orange once in high school, and pink once in college, but in my limited experience, I've found that the bleach from Manic Panic works exceptionally well. Took my hair from an auburn/chestnut brown to platinum blonde, and gave me a great base to dye on top of. No hint of my own natural color could be seen anywhere. From your pictures though, you look beautiful as both a blonde and a brunette! My amateur advice: let yourself get used to the brown, while using hot water to try to get it to lighten as much as possible. After a week or two, if you still can't stand the new color, use professional strength bleach (obtainable at any beauty supply shop), bleach it as light as you can, and then head to a new and better stylist and see what he/she can do.

If you didn't get what you want, I wouldn't pay. Go to another colorist and have them help you. The best I can advise is to find a salon that specializes in hair coloring and tell them you have an ombre disaster to fix.

I agree with Jenny, march in there and demand what I'm assuming is a hell of a lot of $ for something you didnt ask for and are now stuck with.

Maybe post this on Kelly V.s profile, she's been a hair stylist for quite a while and may have a solution:) If I were you I would go to Sally and try a product to lift it a bit then protein treatment and then try a higher lift product a week or 2 later but I've damaged my hair pretty bad being impatient and cheap lol!

I am a professional hairstylist and have experience with color correction. I understand the dramatic difference it can be to go from a bright color to a dark color; you don't feel like yourself. I really think doing a all over bleach yourself is frightening! You can really end up with a disaster due to getting the product on uneven and the timing of self applying will leave you with lots of damage and an uneven color. The chances of that happening is high and will end up costing you more in the long run. Being that you have always colored your hair and is still healthy is amazing; so that should be top priority. Looking back at your blonde picture I can tell you like long healthy hair. Use that as motivation, LOL. My advice is to wait a couple of weeks or until you have new growth because you don't want to keep coloring your hair unnecessarily. Every time you color your hair you loose dis sulfide bonds and that is what holds color and prevents fading. Find a stylist in your area you can trust and stick with them like you did your aunt and cousin. I think the best way is referral. If you see someone that has hair you want; stop them and ask them who there stylist is and research them on Facebook, etc. I apologize for your experience, however rest assured your transformation would normally not be a one visit fix. Enjoy the different colors along the way!

I've gone darker a few times and had it come out WAY too dark and freaked out too. I usually wash it like crazy and the color will fade a ton. I've almost gone back to my hair stylist several times for a correction, but later was glad I didn't. It will be really hard, but give it a few weeks. Maybe it will fade to a lighter brown and then you can just add some highlights and lowlights. I do love you as a blonde though. I'm so jealous.

This was done in the middle of November, so it's been a few weeks...I've been watching it like craaaazy. It has barely faded. I can't see a lot of red undertones anymore and that's about the only difference. I definitely don't want to bleach it myself, because like the hairstylist up there said, I'll mess it up with the timing and everything (it takes me forever when I used to do the red lol). I don't want to add highlights because that would mean this is still the dark base and I hate this color on myself. :'(
The bigger problem is too that I did pay $120 for her to throw this dark brown on (which I could have done myself for $12), and the salon WAS a referral. I actually followed the girl on instagram weeks before I went to see her. She's really talented, her other pictures are beautiful, and she says she specializes in ombres and blondes. I don't know what happened. It was a few weeks ago and I wrote a review about them on their website but I didn't want to say anything because I felt like a jerk. I don't have experience with salons, other than my cousin and aunt, and it's not exactly the same when it's family because we don't follow the rules and etiquette, lol. :( bleh. I think I'm just going to try the Loreal Hicolor and see what happens...even if it only lifts a shade or two, I'll be happy. I'll do a test strand first.

Your stylist probably used an ash color to cancel out the red tones in your hair. Ashy tones tend to appear darker the warm tones and she probably didn't take this into consideration. I'm assuming that's why your hair turned out so dark. you should call the salon and talk to a manager and tell them the situation. most salons will not five a refund but will do everything they can do to make it right. if you decide to take this into your own hands then do a strand test of the hicolor first and also keep in mind that it may not lift evenly. but I would say go back to the salon...it's something that is fairly easy to correct and quick too.

If you actually like the colour but it's your eyelashes and brows that are the problem, you could get them tinted? You do suit it though x
