What to wear to be dressy but not too formal?

I'm going to an event tonight and not really sure what the dress code will be. So I don't want to go over the top with dressing but I also don't want to look under dressed.

I would wear a nice tshirt probably colored or black with a nice scarf. Pair it with khakis or dark dark denim.

I would wear a shirt/blouse, with a blazer and maybe a skirt or nice trousers, but definitely not jeans.
