I use a vitamin C serum that I got from Whole Foods, a 2%BHA liquid exfoliant from Paula's Choice, and a dark spot corrector also from PC. Together these items are working miracles for my dark spots without causing any breakouts.

The dark spot corrector was $25 and the liquid exfoliant (BHA exfoliant) was $26. You can get vitamin C serums anywhere... Sephora, dept stores, Ulta, online.

I love using brightening tone correcting serums and creams. I use REN radiance perfection serum radiance perfection serum, and at night: Korres wild rose + vitamin C advanced brightening sleeping facial, tarte maracuja c-brightener eye treatment, Day: Origins ginzing energy boosting moisturizer along with their eye cream.
