You could try a texturizing spray, I use not your mothers sea salt spray and it gives my hair more hold.

I had the same problem! My hair is super thick and I couldn't find anything that would curl my hair. Then I got the NuMe magic wand and my hair stays curled ALL DAY! I love it and it's worth the money. A lot of girls on YouTube have coupon codes for NuMe wand so you don't have to pay as much (:

I have pretty thick hair and my hair never held with a regular curling iron but with a wand it works so much better the curls stay in for 2 days

I guess your hair curls? I wouldn't use too much product, cause it'll make your hair even heavier and the curls will fall out more easily then.
Also not blow drying it before curling might help.
Pin your curls against the head while they are cooling.
Also I like to use L'oreals Thermo Hot Curl (in the pink bottle), I just spray it in before I curl, it seems to be the only thing that's keeping my hair in a curl all day ;)

I have thick awful hair and I just Load my hair with a strong hairspray if I don't my curls will fall by the time I get to work.

Hi, I had the same problem as you but I tried once to roll my hair during the night and it stayed almost all day long *-* I think this is the most efficient way and it doesn't damage your hair :D.
