Olivia M.
I'm currently doing Fashion Business at uni and have done visual merch so know a lil bit about it. Pay will vary so so much depending on the company but they get pretty decent salaries I believe :) whoever gave you that 'colour wheel' advice should stop handing out advice!! :')
You need to be very creative, so continue with art classes. You also need to be good with computers and photoshop preferably. You also need to understand costs and expenses etc.so get using spreadsheets n feel comfortable with them.
You have to be up to date on trends, art, science, technology and architecture. These give you inspiration and themes for shop displays etc.
Being practical, you should drive (because visual merch often travel around to stores) and also have some muscle! lol Its a hands on job so you will be lifting, painting, using tools etc.
I'm from england sorry so I can't help you with unis sorry :( I would really reccomend getting a part time job in a store and helping out with the visual merch. I took 2 years out before I went to uni worked full time. When it came to my uni interview I hadnt done the 'right' subjects at school but my experience got me in super easy. It's best to have both :)
I hope I was some help! One of my lecturers at uni is a VM for Topshop so she gave us loads of info :) messege me if you have more questions x
