I don't really understand how to clean brushes

I usually use extra virgin oil and water to clean them

If it works, it works. There really is no set way to clean them. Some people use baby shampoo. Some use the oil. Some use dish soap and water. I just use the shampoo I've been using for my hair.

Use olive oil and dish soap. That way it disinfects and still makes the bristles soft

Baby shampoo works great and I may try mrs meyer's all purpose cleaner next as I've heard it is great for cleaning brushes and since it is highly concentrated it will last forever. Not too mention being able to use it for many other purposes is a plus!
