It started over in Germany, Korea, and Asia that I know of. They were created to have very full coverage and skin benefits, as to help patients who had recently had surgery. American versions (not high end, haven't tried high end) are basically tinted moisturizers.

It even out your skintone but is not as full coverage as a foundation,it also moisturiz and do often contain SPF

Something I left out, they often are in lighter shades, as in Asia it's sort of the 'style' to be whiter, while in America it's usually darker/tanner. SPF has a semi-whitening effect so alot of BB Creams have high SPF if Asian/German/Korean.

They're also called blemish balms, originally made in germany to help people who were recovering from skin surgery. They're quite popular in asia, particularly korea. They're known to have high spf, whitening properties, wrinkle improvements etc. They are quite limited in their shades, most tend to lean towards an asian complexion, slightly grey tinged, but most oxidise to match most skin tones. Its more of a tinted moisturiser, quite light coverage and is better suited to those with less problematic skin. The Skin79 and Missha ones are very good asian ones, while i hear the bobbi brown bb cream is a good high end bb cream

If you want a good BB cream don't try American ones , the Asian versions are so much better and there also called beauty balms or beauty blemish balms cause it helped with acne , most in US act like tinted moisturizers , and all a tinted moisturizer does is have 40% sunscreen 30% foundation n 30% moisturizer where as BB creams over seas has more foundation coverage for acne and like the girls above me mentioned for women out of surgery
