Tips on how to get a flawless self tan?

I've never self tanned before and I want to start. I'm really afraid I'll miss somewhere or something. What are your tips on self tanning? Also I saw like a self tan mitton to "perfect" it. Should I grab one of those also? :)

I would probably check on YouTube for a tutorial because it might be easier because it has pics
