Depends on the bar you get really. I'd go for the metal staple bars, not the plastic bars. I say that because staple bars are designed to stay in longer than the plastic bars are. As for healing, I'm not sure about hips but my collarbones and nape were done the same way and my neck piercing has lasted 5 years, no rejection and the healing process was the best of my piercings so far. Be careful with your clothing, only wear things on your hips for the first 6 months or so at least, I have both 2x belly piercings and because they're in a similar region the clothing rubbing on it all the time will definitely effect healing if you aren't careful, clean it twice a day with rock salt and don't touch them at all with dirty hands. I think surface bars heal well but it's different for everybody like Jacqlyn said, your body may reject them, it may not. Just look after them, if you need to wear a patch over them for the first week to be sure they don't get ripped.

Have you thought of dermals, rather than surface bars?

I have hip dermals & I've had pretty good luck with them. My left side has rejected twice, but the left side of my body just hates piercings for some reason. The pain is not too terrible, it's over quickly. Just don't watch them do it 😉 healing time was about 3 months. The scars aren't too bad. They look like a scarred zit but can be removed with scar remover.

I've had hip dermals too. they were okay for about 2 years until my left side also decided to reject them. I took a whole to get them removed because I was being a scaredy cat 😒 so I do have a scar one that side it's like a little bump because my skin healed over that but my right scar is completely flat and unnoticeable I just used mederma. honestly it was nice having them but I feel a lot better without them because I don't have to constantly worry about tugging or pulling. maybe you can try a regular hip piercing, because dermals should be seen as a permanent piercing because the procedure is very different and need to be 'cut' in and out. good luck :)

I have hip skin divers instead of a bar or dermal a because they leave much less of a scar (had one under my other belly piercing) and I love them! I've had them in for a year next month, one is a little red right now because I caught it twice when I was in bed but I'm treating it with tea tree oil and it's working a treat:) healing time is quite quick for skin divers cause you just have to wait for the skin to grow round it. & if you want it to come out, you have to roughly massage the area they are in to break the skin that's grown round. It wasn't painful getting them:')
