When I went with my interview with the chief of police, I played with my hair and I agree, a low ponytail definitely looks more professional than a bun. It looks more clean.
Think 'sleek.' ( I had my hair parted in the middle with the low ponytail. )
I went with my nails uniformly cut and no polish. ( God forbid, you never know if you wear something that the person interviewing you doesn't like. ) No jewelry, may be small studs if you have to.
Of course, I wore a suit and flats. My make up was clean but awake.

They definitely mentioned that I impressed the most, although I was the youngest. I have to say I agree in a sense, One of the other girls at the interview looked very messy in comparison. I think it's all about looking neat and very clean. ( Think the lawyers you see on TV, in Law and Order... very clean cut. Very professional. )
You want them to focus on what qualities you have that can be an asset to the law firm. So I try to make my looks very clean so that it doesn't distract them.
I see it this way... I rather look dressed up and more professional than under-dressed.

Nicely parted middle part pulled back into a lower ponytail looks nice with long hair. A nice pencil skirt sheet black stockings, a nice blouse and a nicely fitted blazer. Go light ok make up nice foundation concealer don't over contour your face. Natural lip color few layers of mascara. I always go with nicely filled nails and a creme colored nailpolish. No jewelry just some nice simple studded eating. Oh just wear nice not a high platform black heel. Make sure it isn't open toed either. Good luck and have a lot of confidence

Maybe a really thin line of eyeliner to define your eyes a little bit on the top, leave the bottom clear of eyeliner

I did black on my top waterline to tightline my eyes.
I put a white liner on my bottom line. (Nude for darker tones would be suitable.)
I put a very subtle amount of brown and blended it on my lower lash line to help make my eyes appear larger.
A lighter concealer on the inner corners of my eyes and contoured the crease of my eye and highlighted my brow bone with a slightly lighter concealer.
