I would go to the hair dressers. I think even if you dye it brown you will still be able to see bits of orange or as your hair starts to fade you'll be able to see the orange then. That's what happening with mine (I had bright red hair then dyed it dark brown but now that it's fading you can see red in it which I like though)

I'm sorry, all I know about hair is that color doesn't lift color, so you couldn't go lighter if you wanted to, it would most likely turn orange. And also I wouldn't go auburn again considering your roots will not take the color, also it will continue to fade, plus if you wanted to dye it a different color it would be extremely difficult to get the red out since it's one of the hardest colors to extract. Overall, box dye is just horrible in general. I'm sorry and I know that you don't want to go darker, but I honestly think that's your best choice. I would most definitely consult with a hairdresser about this and hopefully go for an ombre if you could? That way you don't have to worry about the roots and you'll still get some kind of change.
