I have very dark brown hair that I've been tinting red with manic panic and special effects dye. I bought 40 developer to make the dye stronger but don't know what it will do and how easy it is to mess up.
I just generally have no idea what I'm doing. Suggestions?

I would read the information for both dyes because sometimes its advised you don't mix the developer with hair dye because developer has conflicting ingredients sometimes with the dye so be careful. what you can do is mix the developer with some bleach and lighten your hair first. after you wash that out you can apply the dye so that way its stronger.

The only difference between a 10 volume developer and a 40 volume developer is the speed at which they process. Therefore, regardless of which you use, your roots will not process to any other color.
Bleach is mixed with 10,20,30 or 40 volume developers. Not semi permanent colours.
By mixing you'are semi permanent red with the 40 volume developer, the colour and developer will not react together and it won't process on your head!

Vallerie, that's incorrect. The difference between volumes are the amount of peroxide in them I believe, all bleach expires usage after 45 minutes of being mixed. My 20volume has 6% and my 30vol has 9% so they are different. The difference it makes is how many shades the hair will lighten but exceeding what your hair can take will just make it fall off.

Make sure to ask for help at the beauty supply store your purchasing your products at specially if you use bleach some chemicals can work in harmony together some can't take caution to what your mixing together cause even you may not think your ok you could seriously damage your hair or possibly cause irritation to your skin just consult with someone where your buying everything from you should be ok though??

What Taylor said. I used to bleach my hair, and recently died it brown. I ALWAYS used developer. My mother for years too and I've been told it effects the shade it will come out as. I have no advice as to which one you should use, but definitely ask a professional.

Developer is not used for semi permanent colors such as manic panic...like it doesn't do anything. The only way to get it bright red red would be to bleach your hair really light!

Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer and is what makes permanent hair dye permanent. It works with ammonia to transport the dye into the hair cuticle, and then the peroxide will oxidise the colour molecules to their final form and they'll bind to the hair. This is also the explanation of why when you mix up a hair dye, the mix gradually changes colour as the peroxide activates the colour.
Developer will do next to nothing by itself and in order to work it needs to be mixed with bleach or ammonia in hair dye in order to open the cuticle and work

The higher the developer the brighter 40 would be bright however manic panic doesn't need developer so therefore it wouldn't work. I would lighten your hair with color oops its like a bleach but doesn't have the harsh chemicals like ammonia for example. after lighting your hair the deposit the color red you want.

I think what everyone's saying is a developer won't achieve what you want! You will have to mix your developer with bleach and lighten your hair first... Then once that process is finished then add your manic panic dye :)
