I would recommend lightening/bleaching your hair then use a brown over the top. That's what I did (I had bright red hair) you can still see tinges of a dark red in my hair when the light shines on it but when I come to dye it next time it will be gone! I've been home dyeing my hair since I was 13 and I'm 19 now so I'm pretty sure this way would work. But depends what colour you wanna go?

Try using a color with a cool base ( like an ash), it will neutralize the red tone and take it to a natural brown

Have you tried the Color Oops, ect products?
If you do the washing correctly it usually will remove color.
Otherwise, there's making it darker, which would be super easy and more healthy, or bleaching to get it lighter.

If you want the redness out, use brass free colors or colors with ash in them.
