Well, your going to need to make sure your hair is strong. Condition and get plenty of proteins into the system. Then you have to bleach it (over the weekend so you can let the hair rest). That night, use a toning conditioner. Suggestion:get a kit of splat for purple hair, use the bleach, then mix a tiny bit of the purple into your best conditioner. Let that sit in your hair for a decent amount of time. Then I'd suggest a bun day on Sunday, dye it a medium ash brown or up to light ash blonde depending on what color you'd like, but buy lighter than you think you need. Continue toning. I just went through this process the long way.

Oh, jeez. Read that horribly wrong. :( just get one color lighter than what looks like it matches. It will turn out darker in bleached hair.

I would dye it all blonde and then brown again or just dye the bottom the same color as the top.

You can do a color filler on the lighter bits and then color as normal. Worked like a charm when I went blonde to black. Just use the color straight out the tube, don't mix with any developer, and coat the light parts of your hair for 15 mins. Wipe of excess, do not rinse, and then process as normal.

Thanks for all your help guys!
@Haley do I only apply the filler on the bleached parts or my whole head?
