What makeup is a must for a makeup artist?what would be a good starter case?

I suggest you check out the "Building Your Kit" series under the editorial section; that should help a lot. In terms of cases, I prefer train cases because they're sturdy and I don't have to worry about my makeup being crushed/broken/banged around.

^ agreed. it's probably the best thing I've ever read. it teaches you EVERYTHING about makeup, brushes, cases, etc.
