How do you even get started?

I've been looking around and I've started asking photographers who work mostly TPF whether they would be interested in collaborating with me or not. Usually they just defer to already established industry pros, even if it means they have to pay for their services. This really frustrates me because if this continues, I will never get a chance to get started. Any advice?

Hi Amanda! I know it may seem frustrating at times, but if this is what you really want, you shouldn't give up. It could be a good idea to invest in a good camera and study some photography, so you can take the photos yourself.

You could look for some up and coming photographers who are starting out the same as you. Just make sure to check out their work beforehand so you know what you're getting. The pictures may not be as stunning as they would be coming from someone who's been a professional photographer for 10 years, but they should be good quality and show your makeup well.

also go to local agencies they enploy makeup artists

Ah. Local agencies gotcha - nope, I didn't go to makeup school! I weighed the pros and cons and I decided against it. I actually might instead decide to work more on a non-editorial end, more of working with students for their senior portraits or for events like homecoming or prom. There's a demand for MUAs' in that respect, less for print work. I also am pretty decent with stage makeup (I do alot of theatre work myself!) so I could also work with students in that respect as well.
