I want to know the best way to clean a flat iron or any hot tool in general?! I've watched many Youtube videos and they were all very different. I don't really want to buy some sort of iron cleaning spray. I've been using baby wipes to clean it, but I'm not sure if that's right?! Also how often are you supposed to clean an iron?!
Thanks guys!

I usually clean mine every time I wash my hair, so I straighten with a clean iron. The best way without using a cleaning spray is using a terry cloth towel dripped in warm water to get the residue off. Plug in the iron and turn it on to get it warm (not hot!), then turn it off and unplug it, then wipe down the plates. Frankly, my iron never got clean enough from doing this, so I ended up buying a bottle of cleaning spray by Hot Tools (you can get it at Ulta, $6) and it works wonders on my Chi.

The proper way to clean it according to the beauty class I go to (we literally went over this yesterday!) is to put it on a medium setting for 5 minutes to get it warm, turn it off and unplug it. Use a terry cloth or a SOS pad with a tiny bit of soapy water (think barely damp) and gently wipe it. You want to be very gentle or it will scrap and scratch the iron causing even more bacteria to grow inside. And then use another slightly damp cloth and wipe the soapy residue off. :) the same way with curling irons
