So I just bought a bb cream and I haven't really been using it just because I wasn't really happy with the amount of coverage it gave me. I stopped using primer because each one broke me out and so I was wondering if using a bb cream as a primer would work or if its too cakey?

why don't you just try it?

It depends on which one I suppose. I tried to use the garnier bb cream kind of like a primer and then put my powder over it and it just looked oily and cakey. I'm sure if you got one that worked with your skin you could! Garnier was just too oily for me.

When I wear the Garnier BB I like to put the L'oreal Studio Secrets Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream underneath, as a primer, because I'm not wowed by the coverage on its own. You can always use a BB as a primer for foundation or any face product- if it seems to work! <3

Bb cream is supposed to act as a primer. That's one of the uses. Drugstore brands don't really do what a bb cream is supposed to do, though.
