Layered Hair Braid tips

I have medium-long length layered hair. I usually wear my hair down or in a ponytail, but lately I've been wanting to put my hair in a side fishtail braid. Every time I've tried this layers stick out, and my shortest layers just fall out of the braid. Bobby pins jut aren't doing the trick. Please help!!!
