I've been bleaching my own hair for a year now and it usually takes for ever for my roots to become a light blonde. Last time I tried to bleach my roots with a 40 volume developer and it fried my scalp. Are there any tips to bleach black roots to a light blonde without completely frying my scalp? Also, are there any diy hair masks for afterwards?

Just don't apply the bleach to the scalp, you can still get your roots :). if not try a highlift colour

I bleach my black roots every month or so. I have to use 40 volume and I leave it for exactly 2 hours!! Yes it's painful but tolerable. After that I use a toner the color is called champagne I leave it for about 15 min.

20 volume is the only safe volume to use on your scalp the rest can cause damage to your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and use either a blue based bleachor a violet based bleach. Do a scalp check before you do any bleach process and only bleach your hair about every two months it gives your scalp a break as well as your hair. You do not have to bleach your hair to the color you want. Use toner to fix any orange or yellow tints.

I do go to a professional and two hours works for me because I have course black hair so anything less than two hours leaves me yellow...my scalp is perfectly fine. Yes the first couple days it feels dry but I think it's worth it :)
