I really want to curl my hair and I have wand and a 1 1/2" straightener which I would prefer to use. Any tips for 1) my shoulder length hair and 2) not making it super poofy.

Well you should probably use a heat protectant if you have one and I think you should use the wand..I always get better results from the wand than the straightener, and to hold the curl I suggest you use a very good hair spray! :-)
