I have been a makeup artist for 7 years and only in the past 3 years have I been really focusing on this career. My bridal prices are set and have only changed minimally in the past years to catch up to other rate changes. However, I have been doing alot of photoshoot work. What do you all charge for a full day? (8hours) or do you charge by look? What do you do if someone wants to negotiate price? My important question is. Is it okay for one photographer to pay a different price than another? Is this fair? Thanks in advance!

When I go on photo shoots I usually charge by look. If its an all day thing, I have a flat rate (time, gas, materials). And I don't change my price for different photographers. Be consistent.

It is obvious to me that unless one photographer requires more work that the next... more time more product etc their rates should be the same.
If you are putting in the same effort, same products etc why would you charge one less and one more?
I agree with Toshira.

Hi Whitney.... I'm on the other side of the coin. I would suggest a day rate that is competitive with others around your area. Day rates (only IMO) suggest a more business like approach for what you do and photographers that I know appreciate that as they know the max cost up front and don't get bitten by hidden "extra look" costs. I would work out your max looks that you can achieve in a day, add gas and other costs etc and then go from there. My day rate is $400 plus travel costs and that usually works out to be a 5hr day... anything more and I live with it because anything less I make from it :)
Day rates, in the end.. make you a bit more money if you can be consistent :)

So helpful! To answer those questions about why I would charge different photographers different prices... I live in KY and business oppurtunities are few and far between. Lots of shoots fall short of being able to pay me my full day amount, so I hate to pass up those $300 days because they can't pay like the bigger shoots. I am a full-time makeup artist so I need all business that pays anything more than me breaking even! lol. BUT, you all have been super helpful and I have decided that to make up for their shortfall in payment, I should ask photographers or whoever pays for a trade. Like comp cards or to do a beauty shoot for me to make up the difference. I needed to find a way to make it fair to all who hire me. I want to treat others the same way that I would like to be treated.

I live in VA and I always get TFP work for photo shoots and I am selective about it. I charge by the hour and I am very reasonable too. But yet they don't offer the paid work. So I made it clear approach me if you can at least pay hourly because material is not cheap. I also want to find a way that if I am doing shoots I get paid for it since we stand long hours change looks etc

Do NOT charge by look. You charge half day or full day rates.

On a photoshoot a model would not be charged per look, it would be how long they are there. Same thing with a photographer, hairstylist, wardrobe, etc. so it shouldn't be different for makeup artist.

if its all day it should be a flat rate
