Hair Curling/ texturizing help?

Hi, so I have ridiculously long, extremely thick, straight hair and no matter what I do, I can't curl it. The curls never turn out right or even, or ever stay put. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd love to be able to do different styles with my hair, but my hair makes it impossible :(
