It always helps to have a blending brush just for blending. And having a light hand and patience. Please keep working on it and don't give up :) it can seem annoying (trust me, it's not fun trying to achieve a look and not getting it immediately) but keep at it. Make sure you have a matte crease color. And keep blending and adding color. Start off with a simple smokey eye with only a few colors.

Just think of the rule Dark fade to light hence (Smoked) dark covers all lid then fades the smoke up,it's one of the most beautiful mistake type of eye shadow style and it looks harder then it is.Here is a look at my smokey eye :) Best advice and easy tip I could give you is when applying a cream or gel liner make a line like you would while putting on a cat eye liner then get a small blending brush and spread it while it's still wet then work your way all over the lid and work up fading it then to make it more intense add the dark shadow over lightly then fade again now here is a good transition color is Mac cork or something similar to fade any harsh lines to help smooth the effect.

And remember Don't confuse a smokey eye with a Gradient style eye which sooooo many confuse the two.
