Pale yellow should be fine for pastels, taking it past pale yellow leads to severe damage and melting or breakage. A purple shampoo can neutralize the yellow a bit more but this would probably be fine. What colour pastel?

I would strand test a pastel first. it may or may not come up. a toner would be your best bet to remove some unwanted yellow...use something ash or purple based. instead of a purple shampoo, see if you can find a purple conditioner. that actually deposits color. Aveda makes a nice one for yellows called Blue Malva.

The Paul Mitchell won't work it's not purple enough!

You may be fine with that color base, but I would still try toning it with a violet based toner before dying it. Just using a toning shampoo alone never removes enough yellow for me, I must use an actual toner to get rid of my yellow tones when bleaching. It should take out a lot of the yellow and leave you with a more light, possibly white base to work with.

That around the color I have to get mine everytime I'm going from natural color to any bright color. I would think it should be ok for either of the colors you are thinking of doing

I don't live in the US. I live in Canada. and a toner will say toner on it?? or can you use a white dye. also, does it damage your hair...I'm worried about the, especially after bleaching.

If you do lilac you would be fine since it will tone the hair as well, with seafoam you may end up with it being a teensy bit more green with the yellow of the hair.

Erica, the lilac may come out a little muddy, same with the green. because pastel dyes are so.light, any remaining pigment in the hair is going to effect the outcome. a toner can be any semi permanent color, (or sometimes called deposit only color) you want to get a light ash blonde or something violet based. I would go to your local beauty supply store and ask them to help you.

Erica get a bottle of deep conditioner. That's what I ended up doing since I had to bleach my hair so much when I thought I was going red and green.

The toning conditioner that comes with the new L'Or?al (?) extreme platinum colors is great. Like, turned my platinum purple in under 5 minutes great! I used the very lightest they have now - name is something like "extreme platinum". My hair is pretty short and I get at least 3 uses from a tube so even if you don't use the dye/bleach, the conditioner is probably worth it

Provoke touch of silver purple shampoo will help lift the yellow. It definitely helped me and its cheaper than a lot of purple shampoos :)
