Here's a pictorial, and see if you can get Jacqueline H to answer your question, she's a smokey eye master. The key is to remember the graduation of color, darkest should be on your lid, mid tone in your crease and lightest under your brow.

Easiest solution? Medium color across the lid, smudge a dramatic liner of the same color family, and smudge like crazy, then add highlights to make it clean.
