I love seeing a person with bold looks on a daily, colored eyeliner also makes eyes pop, if everyone wore the same thing or stopped,doing what they wanted when it came to makeup there would be no creativity and that's what makes things interesting.

Complete agreement. There are certain rules that shouldn't be broken (bronzers for contouring) because it's insulting to the people who train their whole lives and know how to do things properly. Personally, I don't wear black eyeliner much. I infinitely prefer to use colored liner for any look. But what kills me is when people say you "have to" or "can't," because who the hell are you to be telling me how I should do my own personal makeup?

Agree 100% I hate when people tell me no it's not supposed to be like that. There are some things that are common sense like matching your foundation and etc.but some rules can be broken and made to be gorgeous

There's a lot of parallels between the art world and the makeup world, especially when it comes to rules and guidelines. formal schooling will teach you important theories and techniques that will only help you improve, but the nature of these fields will also call for the need to break or tweak here and there to allow freedom of expression. its important to learn which "rules" create a foundation for your work to shine and these are the rules you should do your best not to break.

Anytime, Jackie. I'm no professional (obviously!) but I respect you and your profession, and I think people who see your advice and responses on here and ignore all of it won't get far in the world of makeup. I agree, just because people physically can do whatever they want, doesn't mean that it is flattering or technically correct.

I completely agree. I've seen a lot of girls say that black lipstick will never look good, but I've seen so many girls rock it! I couldn't seriously agree more! Agreed with Hannah, some rules really shouldn't be broken like the essential ones, but colored liner is THE BOMB DOT COM! Please don't try to force me into your standard of what everyone should wear, what is acceptable. Agreed with Miss Jackie as well!

I'm sorry I'm such a make up noob but... why shouldn't bronzer be used to contour? I know there's separate pallets and powders and creams for both but I'm not understanding where its insulting? Sorry if it sounds silly, I chose med school over cosmo school! :P.

Personally I,m a conservative person and make difference between day/evening makeup and other "stereotypes". But when it comes to over persons - if you rock it, why not!?

@allison lol I don't get it much either. I bought myself a contour kit cause I heard about the bronzer thing but some confuse me, like the hoola bronzer , for me it's a bit dark to be a bronzer and I see a bunch of people use it for contour

@Allison Bronzer is usually warm toned. The point of contouring is generally to mimic shadows on your face. When we apply foundation, our faces appear flat, without definition, and sometimes fatter.
Contouring and highlighting helps bring the dimension back by mimicking shadows. However, lots of girls aren't too keen that bronzer and contouring are two entirely different things. They apply bronzer in the right area, but then label it as 'contour'. This is because of marketing, mainly. In other words, it's like me putting blush where it belongs and calling it 'contouring'. I've seen lots of blush/bronzer duos labeled as contouring, so of course those ladies who don't know refer to it as contouring.

I think the only reason make up rules should be broken if its for the BETTER. I understand that make up is an art and blah blah blah, but a lot of rules are for the technique, not the subject if that makes sense. I'm not going to apply lipstick on my friggin forehead because I want to be rebellious, lol. I've seen people use blush as an eyeshadow, thats a good rule to break.
Like I posted in my make up rules you break thread, I use a matte black shadow instead of brown to fill in my brows. Guess what? They look more natural and softer, to me the brown just looks too harsh. Yet if I mention this to anyone, people will have a whole barn.

When it comes to things like "red eyeshadow looks terrible" or "coloured eyeliners look weird", I think it comes to personal/style preference. what someone doesn't like, someone else might.
also, I agree with Hannah & Jacqueline.. certain makeup rules should be followed, as with anything I suppose. but as for makeup stereotypes, I don't think they should exist (:

That makes complete sense. Thank you ladies for explaining it better, and thank you Miss Jackie for making it the most clear. I personally like hearing the 'make up rules' and seeing the debates about them. I'm not much of a make up wearer but I like applying it and experimenting. I would love to do work like I see many girls on here do but I'm not a bold or heavy make up type of person. I do admire it all though and fully understand what I love and looks good on one individual might not work for me. :)

Totally agree with hannah and jacqueline. Jacqueline couldn't explain it better. Many times girls forget what beauty makeup is for. It's to stand out our PERSONAL beauty, I love red eyeshadow but I can't wear it. Just doesn't look good on me, so I don't use it, I wanna look prettier not sickish. I let the red shadow for girls that look good on it and I focus on shadows and colors that make me look prettier. And I think that contouring thing is going crazy, I've seen a lot of redish and shimmering faces, and doesn't make me think anything good of it. bronzers doesn't create any shadow. Contouring is a light/ shadow thing. I agree.
