Well you need a license for cosmetology or whatever, so I'm guessing thats why people go to beauty school?

It depends on whether or not your state requires you to have a cosmetology license to be a practicing makeup artist. Most states do.

Also, it totally helps to have gone to school, you learn proper techniques and such. Helps your credibility immensely.

I think you can still do make up. but if you ever want to work at a salon than you might want consider in the investment.

It's a union thing because that's why I'm going for as well. You can go to school or be self taught. :)

You can, because I have friends that do makeup for weddings or quinceneras and they have no liscence. but to work in a salon you need a licence
