It has to do with color theory and basically what shade your skin is. For example, to find out what your undertones are:
-which looks better on you, gold or silver jewelry? Gold jewelry=warm undertones, silver=cool, both=neutral.
-look at the veins in your wrist, do you see green or blue veins? Green=warm, blue=cool, both=neutral.

I'm personally neutral, I look best in silver jewelry but see green veins, I tan more than I burn, my face doesn't have a reddish tint to it (if you burn more, you're likely cool toned, if you tan you're warm. If your skin tends to look pinkish with nothing on it, you're cool).
