Don't avoid it. It's fine to exfoliate with a pimple. May bring it to a head.

I tried exfoliating around it but the top layer of skin just peeled and it popped.

You can scrub but make sure as bit to be too rough. Any extreme pressure could break the follicular wall and cause a new infection in the next follicle.

Dont scrub your pimples... That will make it more iritate then leaves a bad scar/hyperpigmentation

Don't scrub. It can irritate pimples and lead to acne scars (plus itll hurt :( )Try using a pulsating face brush like clairsonic to exfoliate.

Exfoliating pimples is a bad idea. It re-opens the pore so even more crap can get in there, and then you will risk having it turn into a cyst. I would suggest either using a very gentle exfoliant and avoiding the area of the pimple, or using an AHA/BHA lotion or Benzoyl Peroxide to do the exfoliating for you.

Avoid the pimple. Use an extractor if you must. Try using an enzyme exfoliator like Kate somerville's exfolikate or the one from amore pacific.

I exfoliate but gently with a slightly rough face scrubby BUT gentle is the key word! Also I do this because they will get flaky on top and I like to get that relieved but I also moisurize after if its not all irritated and ready to pop

Be gentle or you can cause damage. Lightly buffing with a soft washcloth is a good option.

I don't recommend scrubbing your pimple because it will only cause more irritation to it. Scrubbing it may cause a scab on your skin. At least that is what happened when I scrubbed my pimple once.
