What's the trick to applying mascara? I've tried the business card trick to cover them entirely but I feel like that wastes a lot of mascara. I also have a friend who sometimes separated each hair with a needle to avoid the clumpy look. What do you ladies do?

Close your eyes and stroke the brush left to right while moving upwards. This will keep the lashes separate and prevent you from getting mascara on your lids. NEVER use sharp object near your eyes, that's just asking for an accident !

I used to just brush them with the brush/wand horizontally and occasionally comb through with a lash comb, but then learned in a beauty school class about using the brush vertically, especially when targeting the bottom lashes. More precision I guess and easier to get to the root/base of the lashes, although make sure you don't poke your eye! I know you could use a tissue behind your lashes so as to catch goop from the mascara and not get the mascara on your makeup/face, although I haven't tried that yet. I think I learned about that through a video tut I saw from the Makeup Designory, or MUD.
