A smokey eye is obviously intended to look like smoke. So it's often going to be darker shades on the lid and very well blended as you get further up.

Here's kind of how I do mine c:
I start with a light brown & make my way darker & darker. the 2nd one Renay posted is a really great smokey eye tutorial!
