I will be traveling to Italy in a few weeks and I will be out in the sun so I do have some questions.
Facts that could help you:
•I wash my hair every 2-4 days to help keep the color longer.
•I wash with cold water, of course.
•I use the L'Oreal Hicolor Hilights for Dark Hair Only in the color Red to dye my hair.
•I re-dye my hair every 4-8 weeks depending on how much it's been washed/faded.
My questions for you guys:
-I do use color safe shampoo, but are there any ingredients/chemicals I should look out for when buying shampoo?
-For conditioner I use products that deep condition or moisture condition to keep my hair and ends healthy, but the bottle doesn't necessarily say it's "color safe". Is that bad? (Question one also applies here.)
(eg. L'Oreal Total Repair Extreme Emergency Recovery Mask for extremely damaged and over-processed hair, and Biotera Ultra Moisturizing Reconstructing Conditioner that hydrates extremely dry, overworked hair.)
-Are there products I could use while in the sun to protect the color? (I heard being in the sun fades dyed hair quickly)
If any of you's could answer these questions or give any tips of your own I will greatly appreciate it!
xx Melissa

Definitely stay away from sulfates in shampoo. That's what strips color.
The conditioners you use should be fine :) I just got my hair dyed brown after being blonde for a long time, and my hair never holds color because it's SO porous and I've been using Loreal ever pure shampoo (you can get it at a drugstore for like 8 dollars I think) and then it's a 10 daily conditioner and I haven't seen ANY fading or washing out. I always dread washing my hair after it's dyed because I know I'm going to turn around and see all the color on the bottom of the shower and I haven't seen ANY of that! :) I think this is my golden combo.

Also, look for a UV spray for your hair. I just got a beach spray at VS that has salt and UV protection in it, that will greatly help it from fading too quickly

-Ingredients to avoid in shampoo: Sodium Chloride and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Both with strip your hair and leave it dry ad brittle.
-the same ingredients should be avoided in conditioners, and most people will say to avoid silicone, but for my dyed hair silicone actually prevents the color from escaping.
-the best product in the sun is a hat, but barring that I believe there are certain hair products that contain SPF (don't quote me, I've never looked into them).
I'd be happy to share my hair routine if you'd like! As you can see from my picture, my hair is dyed to high heaven, and I have to do a lot to keep it nice.

Your hair looks gorgeous! I dyed my hair dark red not so long ago and I really thought that it's going to wash out a lot since my natural hair is dirty blonde/light brown but it's not that bad. So here is what I usually do:
- Things that strip off color in shampoos are sulfates. So you could try buying a sulfate-free shampoo. All tho I don't use that because my hair gets greasy quicky and when I use a sulfate-free shampoo I need to wash it like every other day. What I use is Color Mate Shampoo by Aussie, and it's perfect, I highly recomment it!
- Put some red temporary hair dye in your shampoo/conditioner bottle so everytime you wash it you 'refresh' your color a bit
- Use products that will protect your hair from salt and sun. I'm using one from Balea right now and it's awesome plus it smells really nice (:
- If you have problems with greasy hair I would recomment using conditioner for greasy hair and not applying it all the way to the rootes. If not use ones for colored hair
That's it! Hope this helps :)

Definitely get some veggie dye and use that, but be careful to do it at least 2-3 washes before you leave, or it might drip red when it's wet. Put a little bit (dime size amount for a normal conditioner bottle will do but you'll have to empty your bottle into a mixing container to make sure it's all mixed) into your conditioner. Or keep a bottle in your shower and squeeze a drop into your hand and mix it with conditioner. It's non damaging and acts like a deep conditioner. But if you do put some in, make sure you condition from root to tip of your hair or it might be brighter at your ends.
My favorite shampoo and conditioner are the organix coconut milk line. Any of the organix ones are fantastic at keeping my color in for weeks. Loreal ever line (strong, pure, creme) like Lauren suggested is also really good. Any sulfate free shampoo. My color lasts literally months longer now that I use sulfate free.
Make sure none of your hair products have alcohol in them. Including heat protectants, creams, gels, hairsprays etc. alcohol will fade your hair super fast. Heat tools also fade hair faster, and the sun so always wear heat protectant or hair sun care products. :)

Use a heat protector. That will coat your hair with a layer of Product

I agree with Alyx :) also I'd buy a spray bottle and a red vegan dye, put a few drops of the dye in the bottle and fill the rest up with water, this will last a while and touch the colour up while you go about your day and wash it out at night :)

I couldn't stress more, sulphate free shampoos!
