How to not get hair kinks from elastics?

I like putting my hair into a side braid to go to sleep but the elastic at the end makes my hair all kinked at the bottom. How can I stop that?

You can wrap your hair at night instead (YouTube it)

Don't tie it too hard and use something other then rubber band elastic to tie.
