What is the difference between cleanser and exfoliator, and when washing your face do you use both product, and which goes first and which goes second? Thank you.

Exfoliator is more like a scrub, it has tiny beads or how do you call those XD Cleanser doesn't. I wouldn't recommend using both every day. Cleanser can be used every day though.

Cleanser is meant to wash away all the grime, makeup and oil to clean the face thoroughly. An exfoliator is meant to scrub all the dead skin off your face to unclog pores to prevent blackheads, acne & to help skin treatments absorb more efficiently.

Cleansers go first.

A cleanser is meant to cleanse your face of make up, dirt, impurities, etc.and comes before exfoliation.
Exfoliation is removal of dead skin cells... to get rid of dry, full, flaky skin, blemishes, clogged pores, uneven skin tone. When you exfoliate, you can help stop break outs and get rid of clogged pores. It can help get rid of dry skin...
Two types of exfoliants are involved here..
Physical and Chemical
Physical Exfoliation only focuses on the outermost superficial layer of the skin. (Scrubs. ) It can generally irritate the skin and only removes dead skin cells. It's very easy to go over board. You want a rounded scrub.. not a harsh scrub like the Apricot scrubs which are too much for the skin or you are just setting up your skin for havoc.
Chemical exfoliation.. can exfoliate as deep down as into the pore. Very gentle and gives great results. Much better than Physical exfoliation and more beneficial.

^ Kitty, I love this info. What's a chemical exfoliation? Like using products with AHA in it?

Chemical Exfoliation usually comes in Gel, Liquid, or Creams and is applied right after a toner.
AHA, BHA's are both exfoliants. AHA is more for dry & sun damaged skin. BHA's is more for breakouts, oily skin, white heads, black heads, helping with inflammation, and those with rosacea can benefit from using a BHA. Both are great for acne marks, spots, red spots.
There are exfoliants with a low percentage ( 1-2%) so that you may use it twice daily. And others with a higher percent (4%,5%,7%,10%) to use once a week to retexturize the skin.

Kitty, can you buy a chemical exfoliant at, say, the drugstore or in the sephora skincare section? Or would you have to get it from a dermatologist? And if it is available in stores, do you have any specific product recommendations?
I'm glad you made this thread Melissa. (: all of these ladies are very helpful.

Cleanser just removes makeup from the surface of your face while a exfoliator works to remove dirt and oil from the pores in your face. Depending on what skin type you have depends on what you should use. I have oily skin and I exfoliate once a day preferably at night and just using your normal cleanser in the morning But if you have dry skin I suggest exfoliating only around 2 times a week because it may cause further irritation
