Prevent liquid eyeliner getting in eye?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent liquid eyeliner getting in my eye? Even when I make sure to not get it in my eye when applying, it eventually ends up in my eye.

I have the same problem I find for me that putting pencil on my upper lid first not only makes my makeup look better but it helps prevent the liquid from getting in. I was also just not taking enough excess of the liquid brush before applying. How this helps.
