I'm cleaning out my closet and I have WAY too many shoes and shirts!! What are some easy ways to maximize my closet space, and give me more room for my shoes and shirts?

Donate, sell, or trash everything you are not using. It will feel great to downsize and create more space for the things you really love and often use.
Separate your wardrobe into two categories: Fall/Winter Cold Weather Clothing and Spring/Summer Warm Weather Clothing. Put your Warm Weather wardrobe into storage. Just fold everything up and put them into tupperware boxes to switch out next season.
To create space in your closet, buy another bar to install under the original hanger bar. This will create a whole second row of space to hang your shirts.
For shoes, I personally keep some that I don't use very often on the shelves in my closet, but the ones I wear often I keep on a shoe rack. You can also buy some cubbies to put in your closet/somewhere else in your house for shoes. I've seen a couple of shoe rack DIYs that you can do by nailing crown molding to the wall.
Here's a link to instructions and a picture of the crown molding shoe rack: http://www.marthastewart.com/274667/25-bedroom-organizers/@center/276989/organizing

Get rid of as much as you can (please donate!) and then go to IKEA for cheap storage. If you haven't worn it in a while, if you wouldn't buy it if you saw it in a store right now, if you don't LOVE it, and if it just doesn't fit: GET RID OF IT!
These are things that have really helped me organize my closet.
