There isn't really another way. You would have to colour it fully or highlights/ombre there just isn't another way, correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe dye underneath the main hair like the under layer maybe a darker brown or the upper layer lighter? I personally think some red-toned brown highlights would look great.
