I just make a regular bun and pull out some pieces to make it look casual :)

Use a sock donut/bun ring. This keeps structure to your bun so that when you pull pieces out, you don't mess up the shape of the bun. Also, tease your hair to make it look voluminous. :)

One way is to make a loop by pulling your hair partway through (how far depending on the length), but upside down so the loose bits are on top instead of underneath. Then I take bobby pins and fasten the loop in sections over the elastic and pinning the ends that are left hanging out so it looks good but still messy. I'll post a pic below.
The other way is by starting with a regular pony and twisting pieces and pinning them sort of randomly back around the elastic until you're happy with it.
Both methods look best if you have previously curled your hair (especially second day hair) but totally not necessary.
Hope this is helpful. I never realized how hard it would be to describe how to do your hair in words lol.

I make a low pony, then fan it over the elasticity and put a smaller elastic around that. Then I pull and pin until it looks the way I want. I learned it from The Small Things blog, she's a hairdresser and has great tutorials!
