Dry or damaged?

How can you tell the difference between if your hair is dry? Or damaged? Or if it's damaged because it's dry?!? I've always had split ends and breakage and have always thought I just had brittle hair. I don't dye my hair but do use heat tools, usually just blow drying and always use heat protectant. Could my hair actually just be dry?
