I have a feeling this is broken hair. how do I stop it/prevent it from happening again? I straighten my hair and that is about it. are all these flyaway short peices of hair broken?

You know those hairs you lose everyday? Whether
it be from styling, combing, or just random? It's might be those growing back :). Also, you should always use a heat protector when straightening your hair. You can calm those hairs down with a hair serum or oil and a deep treatment will help strengthen your hair from everyday damage.

Are you sure they are broken?? The tips looks damaged?? They may be a lot of grows like simran said. That happens to me once at year. A lot of little grow comes together and looks like that.
