I have returned things to MAC before! Go it for it!

If its from the Mac counters inside Macy's, Nordstrom, etc. they will allow an exchange only, the tag has to be on the item/package. You will definitely need a receipt if you are going to a Mac store, they are strict there, no exchanges or refunds without a receipt.
