I've heard of it before, it's not uncommon.

Thankyou for the links! :) xxx

You're welcome! :]

Better try to find ways to stop doing it. (before it too late). It become the habit so will takes time to fix. Similar to stop smoking... One idea is asking your friends or brothers, sisters to pinch you if they see you doing it. You will be more aware and careful as you don't want to get hurt...etc...

Spilt end shall be treated as hair trims and prevent by various hair products apparently.

I'm rubbish with keeping up with a hair routine! I just wash it! I don't use much product. The pinch is a good idea though! I'm going to give that one a go! As long as they have no nails!! Haha!

Thankyou. :)

Is it only the hair with split ends that you pull out? In that case, you could try going to the hairdresser and cut your hair more often so you can keep the split ends away.. I go to the hairdresser once a month and my hair is pretty healthy.

I agree with Ida, you should regularly trim your ends to stop you from wanting to do it. Also are you conditioning your hair? That might also lead up to why you are having split ends in the first place. I used to have a really bad habit of biting my nails but I forced myself to stop. You really have to work at it and once you get used to it, it turns into habit of changing an action you used to do and you won't have the urge to ever pull at your hair again :)

My cousin had this problem due to depression and stress...but she would pull any type of hair... eyebrows, eyelashes, etc. It really makes me sad thinking about it. Sounds like it was just your split ends that were bothering you but its turned into a bad habbit and now you do it subconsiously. I wish I could give you more advice...I know they made my cousin wear silk gloves so she couldn't pull out her hair as easily. You really need to break this habbit and keep your beautiful hair on your head wear it should be!

I have the exact... same... problem.
Except it's not triggered by split ends, I pull hair out a lot. It's become a huge problem, I do it without even thinking about it & when I am aware that I'm doing it, I wont stop until I pull out the "right one" (it's hard to explain) -- I've had many small bald patches on my head from it. I mostly do it for relaxation purposes.

It's gotten so bad that I ask my boyfriend to grab my hand & slap it pretty hard when he catches me. It kind of works... but it's temporary. The only thing that stops me remotely is the fact that I want pretty hair. But most of the time, it's not enough to stop me from pulling.

& I don't want to take psychological medicine for it because I'm STRONGLY against any medication given to treat ANY mental health issues.

It's a terrible thing to deal with :( I'm glad you made this topic.

Mental health issues still carry a heavy taboo, which I think is silly. They are so common, but nobody ever wants to talk about them. Embarrassment, fear.. etc. Often times it is a lot more than willpower and being unable to stop on your own isn't anything to be ashamed of.

There are a lot of resources out there that don't always rely on medication. Working with people who have experience with these issues can give you the tools you need to overcome.

Please don't suffer in silence, empower yourself. :]

^ I definitely wish to find help that doesn't involve medication. I've googled things to do but nothing seems to work. It's gotten so bad that my boyfriend had to tape my hands together for me to stop. It started off as a joke, but in the end, we both knew at that point, it has gotten REALLY bad since I'd try to hide it from him.

I really like what Amanda said - to wear silk gloves. I pull a lot because of texture & thickness. I guess wearing gloves would definitely help stop this. The most I do is paint my nails very frequently so my fingers would be occupied for a long amount of time. Idk, it's ridiculously embarrassing to talk about this. I have no idea why I'm all of the sudden having the courage to do so. >_<

So it's not just me who feels relaxed when pulling my split ends out...

& No, I will purposely make a split end so I can pull it out, or if one of my strands of hair feels weird I will pull the whole thing out! I have tried cutting it regularly but that doesn't work! I will still find tiny ones to pick!

I condition my hair when I wash it, and I have used deep conditioners before, I don't really blow dry my hair unless I absolutely have to... but I guess I could take more time to use heat protectors!
