A lot of colors can actually work pretty well... depending, some brighter colors may really pop. I would suggest playing a bit if you're so new to makeup in order to see what might look nice.

Try golds, bronzes, purples, and deep greens. They all look great on darker skin tones. L'Oreal's Hip collection has some amazing pigments and shadows. And the color stays true on all skin tones!

With darker skin tones like yours, I find that working w/ crease contouring colors works best. It adds the most definition to your eyes. Neutrals can be a little boring, so yes, like you said, plum/purples would compliment your skin tone a lot. Especially if you have brown eyes. Also bronzed colors would look great too. I love when Beyonce does that Bronzed face look. It always looks so glowy. :D
But in reality, make up has no real rules. You can use anything you want & as long as it's well-done, chances are you'll pull it off.
If you're new to make up, you might want to buy a pallet (asuming you haven't already :p) Like you said, Coastal Scents has a great selection for newer make up lovers. You could find the same pallets on ebay (without the Coastal Scents name on the back) for about $10-$12 less. :) Good luck. :D

If you're looking for colors that compliment each other then try using the color wheel. And actually your skin tone is actually dark not medium. Darker skin and brown eyes can pretty much wear any colors. :)

I am also medium skin, use Revlon Kiss Me Coral 750. It's on the warm side and is a deeper coral color but offsets but can bring out your lips and even more so with a top coat of gloss. My lips are on the darker side (dark at top, pink at bottom) so it blends very well evening out the lips.
